Aqsa Altaf was raised in Kuwait by Muslim, Pakistani and Sri Lankan parents who worked as migrant laborers, and immigrated to the United States in 2013 -- an experience that deeply informs her perspective and storytelling.
She wrote and directed AMERICAN EID for Disney’s Launchpad series, which was nominated for an NAACP Image Award and is currently streaming on Disney+. Her short film HEAT was developed by Amazon Studios as a television series, while AWAYY premiered at SXSW and is now being developed as a feature. Her feature project MIRAGE was showcased at the Gotham Film Market and has received support from Sundance.
She is a Sundance Building Bridges Fellow, a recipient of the Pillars Artist Fellowship founded by Riz Ahmed, and part of the Directors Guild of America Asian American Committee Program for first-time feature directors. Through these programs, Aqsa has been mentored by directors David Lowery, Mohamed Diab, and Celine Song.
In addition to her narrative work, Aqsa directs commercials and branded films. Her work includes campaigns for Hershey’s, Disney, Crayola, and Uber, among others. Her campaigns have earned multiple Cannes Lions, as well as D&AD and The One Show awards.
